Moving around, playing, exploring a corridor, or visiting another young patient on the ward are simple activities that take on a whole new meaning when a child is hospitalized. For young patients receiving intravenous treatment, the presence of an IV pole can limit both mobility and independence.
Thanks to the arrival of a new IV bike, hospitalized children can now move around more freely while continuing to receive their treatment. This innovative piece of equipment combines a small tricycle with a mobile, secure IV pole, allowing children to travel independently throughout the hospital.
More freedom during IV treatment
Designed specifically with children in mind, this device offers much more than a means of transportation. It enables young patients to stay active, play, and retain a sense of freedom during their hospital stay. Physical activity and movement are recognized as important contributors to the well-being of hospitalized children, both physically and emotionally.
An innovation designed for young patients
Originally developed by the Princess Máxima Center and UMC Utrecht in the Netherlands, this system combines a stable tricycle with a mobile IV pole. The IV lines are securely positioned to prevent them from dragging on the floor or becoming tangled, allowing children to move around safely.
The bike has been specially designed to combine freedom of movement, enjoyment, and safety. It transforms a piece of medical equipment that is often perceived as restrictive into a tool that encourages activity and play, both of which are essential for a child's development and well-being.
Thank you to the Jan Vertonghen Foundation and Run for Hope
This new acquisition was made possible thanks to the support of the Jan Vertonghen Foundation, which regularly promotes the well-being of hospitalized children through initiatives that encourage sports and physical activity. The IV bike, supplied by Arseus Medical and donated through the Run for Hope association, has now joined our Pediatric Department, bringing great joy to our young patients.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to both organizations for their commitment to supporting hospitalized children and helping make their hospital experience a little brighter.
